The Manassas Republican Party will host a Small Business Roundtable at Prince William Chamber of Commerce headquarters on Thursday, May 17 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Local business leaders will have the opportunity to express their concerns for the economy directly to the George Allen for Senate campaign, represented by the former Virginia Governor’s wife, Susan Allen. Mrs. Allen will offer insight on her husband’s plans for promoting and strengthening small business if elected to the U.S. Senate.

Guest speakers Dr. Robert Templin, President, Northern Virginia Community College and Dr. Michelle Marks, Associate Provost for Graduate Education, George Mason University will speak on educating tomorrow's workforce with a particular emphasis on STEM education. The Chamber will also present scholarships to three outstanding high school seniors and sign a resolution of support and cooperation with NOVA SySTEMic Solutions. The Prince William Chamber of Commerce expressed strong praise for the Prince William Board of County Supervisors following a unanimous board vote to increase the BPOL (Business/Professional/Occupational/License) tax income threshold from $200,000 to $250,000. “Both of these decisions represent progress for the prosperity of our community. A balanced approach towards business taxation and regulation is essential to nurturing our robust rate of jobs creation and economic growth,” said Nancy Hiteshue, Prince William Chamber Director of Public Policy.

Winners of the 2012 Agnes L. Colgan Community Service Awards, sponsored by Cardinal Bank, were also announced. Nominees included businesses large and small from a variety of industries, showcasing the diverse organizations that blend to make Prince William one of the top regions for job creation and economic growth in the nation. Northern Virginia Community College was the Presenting Sponsor of the event. Alex Orfinger, Publisher of the Washington Business Journal, served as master of ceremonies.

From golf enthusiasts, to supporters of education to consummate networkers, the Prince William Chamber of Commerce Frostbite Scramble Golf had something for everyone. Last week business leaders from across Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park gathered at Bull Run Golf Club in Haymarket for a networking luncheon followed by a nine-hole captain’s choice golf tournament. A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit the Chamber’s scholarship program, which this year will award three local high school seniors with scholarships of $2,500 each.

Chamber Extends Scholarship Deadline To Monday, Mar. 19

The Prince William Chamber has extended the deadline for its 2011/2012 Scholarship Program. Application packages are now due to the Chamber no later than Monday, March 19. Through this program three (3) scholarships of up to $2,500 each will be given to high school seniors who have shown a commitment to academic excellence and community involvement. Additionally, to be eligible, students must be an employee of a Chamber member company or the dependent of an employee. “We have long supported academic success and giving back to the community through our scholarship program. Now, we are also able to reward the members of our local business community for all that they do to enhance the economy and quality of life in the Prince William region,” said Rob Clapper, President & CEO of the Chamber.

During last month’s State of Prince William luncheon, George Mason University Provost Dr. Peter Stearns expressed a desire that the business community and university strengthen their ties in coming years, allowing the Prince William region to reap more benefits from the breakthroughs occurring at Mason. This month, the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and the university take the first step, as they partner to launch the inaugural Work Day Work Out Career Fair. On Thursday, March 29 from 10:00 am-3:00 pm, job seekers and businesses are invited to participate in a first-of-its kind career fair aimed at creating opportunity for job seekers, whether they are right out of college or seasoned professionals. The career fair takes place at the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center at 10900 University Boulevard in Manassas and is free and open to the public.

The Chamber has been encouraging its members to follow them on both Facebook and Twitter with increasing success. Since September of 2011, the number of followers on Facebook.com/pwchamber has increased by nearly 200, while the number of Twitter followers of @PWchamber jumped from 554 to nearly 800. Guerrero notes that social media tools now play a much larger role in the Chamber’s communications than they did even a year ago. Every piece of information that goes out to the Chamber membership and news outlets also appears on the social media feeds.

The Prince William Chamber of Commerce polled its membership to determine how, or if, the debate surrounding the national debt ceiling is impacting businesses in the greater Prince William area, which stretches from I-66 to I-95 in Northern Virginia. The region is home to a diverse range of industries, including a growing number of defense contractors. The survey revealed that Prince William businesses are engaged in the debate, with 94% of respondents saying that they are following the issue.

Chamber Applauds Decision to Include Bi and Tri-County Parkways into a New Corridor of Statewide Significance

Today, the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) announced the designation of a new Multi-Modal Corridor. The North-South Corridor of Statewide significance that includes both the Bi-County and Tri-County Parkways and other concepts will be included into a Corridor of Statewide Significance (CoSS). This move protects the preferred Parkways routes from development, allowing time for feasibility studies to continue and for public-private partnership options to be explored. Prior to the vote, Prince William Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Rob Clapper said the designation would be a strategic investment in the continued prosperity of the Northern Virginia region.

BPOL Tax Reform Sees Progress in Manassas

The Prince William Chamber of Commerce expressed strong praise for a unanimous vote by the Manassas City Council to not raise BPOL (Business Professional Occupational License) tax rates and to increase the threshold at which businesses are taxed. BPOL tax liability is based on a company’s gross revenues, versus profits. Therefore, a business operating at a loss could still incur BPOL tax.

Attendees started at Okra’s Louisiana Bistro for appetizers, visiting La Capilla Restaurant for entrees and wrapping up the evening at City Square Café for dessert. The event was held to kick off fundraising efforts for YPNOVA’s just-launched scholarship program. Business leaders in Prince William received first-person perspectives on the recently ended Virginia General Assembly session during the Prince William Chamber of Commerce Annual Legislative Report. The event, held at Old Hickory Golf Club, featured updates from the senators and delegates representing Prince William at the state level, as well as report cards of their voting records on issues such as transportation solutions, Business, Professional, and Occupational License (BPOL) taxes and education funding. With a mission that includes promoting a strong economy and high quality of life in the Prince William region, Chamber representatives say that the planned facilities are a welcome addition to the community. An announcement that the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation will develop a new hotel and conference center adjacent to the National Museum of the Marine Corps was met with support from the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. With a mission that includes promoting a strong economy and high quality of life in the Prince William region, Chamber representatives say that the planned facilities are a welcome addition to the community. The center will be located on 10 acres adjacent to the current facility and feature corporate meeting space, a full service restaurant, indoor/outdoor pool, fitness center and gift shop.

With a resolution to designate the Bi-County and Tri-County Parkways as Corridors of Statewide Significance (CoSS) on the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) March agenda, Northern Virginia business leaders were on hand to show their support for the measure. The I-95 HOV/HOT Lanes project took another major step forward today with the approval by the National Regional Transportation Planning Board (TPB) to include the project in the 2011 Constrained Long Range Plan (CLRP) for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government. The Prince William Chamber of Commerce praised the Prince William County Board of Supervisors for their support of the new I-95 HOT Lanes project and the supportive votes today from Supervisors Mike May and John Jenkins who serve on the regional TPB Board. Clapper went on to state that advancing the project quickly was critical to future economic development in the Prince William region. “Delivering these improvements to our infrastructure is critical to supporting a vibrant local economy and high quality of life in Prince William and the surrounding region.”

The Prince William Chamber of Commerce seeks golfers for its Frostbite Scramble Golf Outing scheduled for Wednesday, March 16th from 12:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Stonewall Golf Club, 15601 Turtle Point Drive, Gainesville. In the event of a late snow, the event will be held on Wednesday, March 30th. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Chamber’s scholarship program, which helps local students to realize their higher education goals. The tournament consists of a nine-hole, captain’s choice game, with a maximum of three clubs plus a putter per player (players may not share clubs). Experienced players as well as novices or those who play just for fun are welcome since two flights are being offered. The $80 per player fee includes lunch, practice range, cart and green fees, a reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres, beverages, raffles and prizes. Members and non-members alike are encouraged to participate.

On Thursday, January 27th the Prince William Chamber of Commerce opened its doors to its members and the public with an Open House and Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the grand opening of its new offices at 9720 Capital Court, Suite 203 in Manassas. The event, sponsored by PW Business, the new business publication of the News & Messenger drew a crowd of more than two hundred business professionals. At the event, the Prince William Chamber introduced the first seven of its Founding Trustees, members who share the vision to create a unified business voice in Prince William.

Economic development and jobs creation were the winners after a recent vote on the Environment Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan by the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. Prince William Chamber President & CEO Rob Clapper said, “We appreciate the votes of six members of the Board of County Supervisors. Their votes rejected highly restrictive language that was proposed for the Chapter. That language would have created an insurmountable barrier for the quality commercial development and high-paying jobs we are working to attract to Prince William County.”

The Prince William Chamber of Commerce has received word that Congressman Gerry Connolly (D) VA, 11th District will attend the Connections ETC tradeshow. The tradeshow will run from 4-7 p.m. at the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center in Manassas and will feature over 100 local businesses and not-for-profit organizations. On Thursday, September 16th the Prince William Chamber of Commerce submitted a letter to Diane Watson, Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in response to Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ recent proposal to significantly reduce defense contract spending over the next three years. The letter, written on behalf of the more than 1,800 member businesses of the Chamber urged lawmakers to look carefully at the proposed cuts and the impact that such action would have on our the local economy.

It has been a busy week at the recently formed Prince William Chamber of Commerce with the announcement of a new Chairman of the Board, Tim Jackson of MDA Technologies Group and now the unveiling of a new logo. The image representing the newest and largest Chamber in Northern Virginia was the result of the combined efforts of GC Schow and Kathy Strauss of member graphic design firm, ImageWerks. ImageWerks was selected to design the new logo after responding to an RFP that was open to all qualified member companies.
